Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. With luck starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
